An interesting musical, certainly a classic that made Liza Minnelli a star, also starring Michael York and Joel Grey.

  • I think Cabaret won the awards it deserved, same with The Godfather, sorry but Cabaret was just simply better directed than the Godfather, Bob Fosse's cheography, way of shooting the thing, the fact taht he had the foresight to trim all the songs outside the cabaret out of the movie and thus make the story much more tightly focused than the stage version. also, Cabaret follows brevity, The Godfather is three hours long and drags even more, but I also have a bias, so... thats that.

To each their own. I myself am a huge fan of "The Godfather" both the book and the film, and I don't think it drags at all. But as I've said before, comparing these two movies is unfair, and I liked them both anyway :)

  • Cabaret and The Godfather are completely different movies, comparing them side-by-side is pretty biased and unfair

  • @Rorschachthe3rd

I do acknowledge this. But my loyalty to "The Godfather" just demanded that I make it clear how "Cabaret" is a very good movie, but not THAT good.

  • It's interesting that when you are told that a film is really good you watch it with a more critical eye.

    Good point

  • the godfather was awful

  • I am a huge Godfather fan, and in the face of directing I agree with you. However, (and I love Al Pacino so it's hard to admit) Joel Grey deserved the Oscar. I'm not sure you understand his part in it. It's more than a comic relief or performer, it is a man who is both a homosexual and Jewish, and despises the Nazi Party, which is why he so often criticizes them.

Al Pacino really deserved an Oscar for Dog Day Afternoon, though. And GF2

  • @JimmySteller To each his own, I like both a lot, and thinks its sad that they ended up in the same year, I lean towards Cabaret because I simply like it more than the Godfather, but as you said, unfair to compare them as they are widely different films.
