TechDirt coverage - http://www.techdirt.com/sopa/

Joe Biden filled in for Hillary Clinton at the London Conference on Cyberspace (LCC) on November 1st, giving a speech on the importance of freedom in cyberspace and talking up the importance of freedom on the internet and not regulating the internet. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration stands with congress in full support of H.R 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act, which would give copyright holders the ability to censor websites on the net.

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

  • @alowlyapprentice

If he was lying, why would the president say he would veto it and why would you post this in the the first place?

  • @ManufacturedLegions Because this is counter to what Hillary Clinton the Sec. of State has said and they will most likely try to harmonize it with PIPA. They are gonna sneak this under the radar. Besides, are out leaders beyond lying to us. There are plenty of examples were they lie. I have no reason to trust them considering who is buttering their bread.

  • @ManufacturedLegions Yea Obama has lied about everything he's promissed, if you want to know what Obama will do look for the complete opposite of what he says. If you remember, or can dig it up Obama said he would veto the ndaa bill because of the Indefinite Detention of US Citizens, but lied. He said he would veto it but behind the scene he had his lawyers make sure it stayed. Biden also said if Obama declares war without congress he will move to impeach.

  • I think that there is some good in sopa. Like how we should stop people from downloading illegal and pirated music, because its hurting our economy. BUT, Sopa has many flaws in it that congress does not realise. 1. Anonymous, they will hack. 2. There will be massive protests. Congress is so ignorant. Sometimes I can't believe we have these people running our country.

  • SOPA is the Internet devil

  • poll: if sopa and protect ip were to pass they might just take over the internet P.S. they already had taken down mega upload.

  • @8XVV Obviuosly you have no sense of humor. Next time I type in "this is a joke" for you hot head...

  • Stop ACTA as well.
