On August 20, the California Senate narrowly passed AB 14XXX that would create a sentencing commision that could lower sentences leading to the release of nearly 30,000 prisoners. The plan is the Legislature's way of implementing a $1.2 billion cut in the corrections budget that was part of the August budget deal. Meanwhile a federal judge has ordered California to release 40,000 prisoners because of overcrowding. The Assembly adjourned at midnight without enough votes to pass the bill. They will try again on Monday, August 24.
