Although the agricultural sector contributes billions of dollars to the U.S. economy, farming remains one of the most dangerous occupations. Each year thousands of farmers including youth are injured or killed on U.S. farms. According to the Center for Disease Control, the 15-19 years of age group is the most vulnerable for farm related death. An estimated 1.12 million children and youth under 20 years of age resided on U.S. farms (2006). For youth who live on a farm, the home and work site are the same location and this environment provides family members the potential for greater exposure to hazards associated with machinery, tools and chemicals.
