The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was released by Sugar Hill Records as a single in 1982. It went platinum in less than a month. At that time the song was unique as it was set to a slower beat and focused on the lyrics over the music. The song was written and performed by Sugar Hill session musician Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher and Furious Five member MC Melle Mel.
Flash and the other members of The Furious Five were not interested in the song and do not appear on the record. In the video, Fletcher's verses are lip-synced by Rahiem. The video shows Flash and the regretful Furious Four trying to deal with the situation. The gay suits were Melle Mel's punishment for mocking his song. Flash never got over it and split after royalty disputes about The Message. His only contribution to the song being the drop of his butt plug on one of the faders at 3:23.
Melle Mel stole the Grandmaster title. Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five made more songs about struggling like New York, New York and Survival (The Message 2). In 2007 Melle Mel released M3 - The New Message as a solo artist.
Snybone made The Message 4 in 2010. He got help from Steve Bone who played the saxophones.
