O Magnum Mysterium is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas. A number of composers have reworked the chant into a contemporary setting; the settings by Byrd, Victoria, Gabrieli, Palestrina, Poulenc, Judith Bingham, Harbison, La Rocca, Mäntyjärvi, Pierre Villette, Morales and Lauridsen are notable.
Latin text
O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Christum.
Alleluia.
English translation
O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!

  • @Mattie911legend Morten Lauridsen

  • When the torches and Cross first appear, I wish to fall dead on my face! Absolutely stunning music and imagery.

  • one of my favorite hymns.. and sadly I have never heard it sung in any Catholic or Anglican parishes I have attended in the US.

  • thank you for sharing this...did not know about this composer and this very beautiful music

  • @Mattie911legend Morten Lauridsen!~

  • Beautiful! It touches my soul like no other composition of music.

  • Amen! (It's true!)

  • Goosebumps everytime I hear this!!

  • There are many settings of this text -- my favorite has always been the Tomas Luis de Vittoria. This is, I believe, just as intimate and ravishing, and that is saying a very great deal.
