i like this woman. she has a dream and nice lips too. but this vision of hers won't fly. there is a population boom underway which trumps these other symptoms. and what about Islam ?
Nothing will change until population is shrunk down to about 2 billion or less people. There are simply too many people in the world to fix the problems.
People using it´s brains instead of their hands, yeah that has work well up till now, people "re-educated" that is scary sounds like a horror movie from the sixties, get a real education miss. "we need a complete change of life and ". You have been brain washed and you have become an infectious zombie contaminating others. Get well soon.
Indeed local "know how" is essential and differs from place to place, but still the main issue is sustainability agriculture. Quinn's solution based on local and labor intense agriculture is at the moment the only solution available as I can see, but is it the best? I hope not, hopefully in the future we might have a cheap energy input (hopefully hydrogen or something like it), plus a low energy demanding agriculture but until then there isn't any other alternative, as I can see.
I disagree that the Cuba model would work elsewhere. Cuba has a good climate and rainfall, and a small population that was living at a less industrialized level. They had much help with contributions from US relatives and tourism, hence a transfer of wealth that the USA will not enjoy.
The USA relies heavily upon irrigation, has a more difficult climate, has people stacked in cities and suburbs, all dependent on industrialized farm.
And just because she proposes a more labor intensive agriculture it doesn't mean is less efficient or denies modern know how or technologies. In fact the modern "oil" agriculture is the most ineffective ever, as it requires 10 cal for every 1 cal it produces.
You obviously misunderstood the message, it is not about going back to the dark ages way of life or romanticize it in anyway. Megan Quinn has a proposal from her fieldwork in Cuba in how to cope with oil crisis, by an alternative and sustainable way of life based among other things on ecological agriculture. The better prepared we are for the transition from oil economy to a sustainable economy the less the worldwide famine will be.
So my question is how many people can be kept alive with this new way of life that peak oil will force on us? Seems to me that the last time we had an economy like she says we must adopt, it only could sustain a world population of under 1 billion. What happens to the 5.5 billion excess?
