On the way to a Montana vacation, Anne and I stopped at Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, WA. Now Grant County Airport, to see if anything was left of the United State Air Force, 462nd Air Police K-9 Section. Larson AFB, part of the Strategic Air
Command (SAC) was closed in June 1966 and the Military Working Dogs were either on their way to Viet Nam or transferred to other SAC bases. I handled two MWD while stationed at Larson AFB from 1964 to 1966, Duke 8F77 and Prinz 203F. I took Prinz to Viet Nam in 1966. Both Duke and Prinz finished their military service with valor in Viet Nam. It was good to see the old kennels again but disappointing to see how they had been neglected. Many good Air Force dog handlers and a lot of great dogs passed through these gates.

  • great clip sir

  • Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video.

  • the only tunnels that i ever knew of was going into and out of the alert building. That is where the alert crews stayed . they would be on alert status probably for a week at a time. They had to stay together and had to get to the plane as a crew within their time limit.

great video richard wish those old kennels were closer so i could go back again. don markum

  • That's what I remember also. Glad you liked the video Don and hope it allowed you to "go back again" for a short visit. R

  • alert building? were is that? do you know anything about the titan building?

  • The alert building was in the center of the B-52 tree at the end of the runway off Randolph Rd. We have not determined where the Titan building was. R

  • @pitbulltrece - a good friend of mine swears that his dad, who was a high ranking base officer at the time, had a tunnel from his base home going to somewhere. Apparently a closet like one of the water heater closets housed the access to this tunnel. He said there were lots of tunnels on the base for emergency operations. I've suggested to him that he knows the area history so well, he should write a book.

  • Sir: I came across this video while trying to find some history on Larson regarding the guard dog training program. None of the official hisotry sites even mention the dog program. I was curious as I visited the training site and took picture in May of 1964 as a boy scout. I just rediscovered the pictures and was checking to confirm it was at Larson. I believe the photos were taken outside the fence near where you parked your car. At that time there were bleachers for the visitors to sit on.

  • i was just reading and they only mention the warden, odessa, royal city silos. that is very interesting,i am amazed and shocked.i didn't know that they were on the base also?
