Dude... Why did I miss your knife on this build? I am happy I found it. Going to watch all you vid now.
-
@lsubslimed ....of course if I was making a file knife for sombody other than myself, I deffinetley go with a Nicholson OR some other old american made file... but yea man,, you can practice on those and see how they come out after HT them. Peace
-
@lsubslimed ........and it looked really fine and uniform. I actually made that knife in my file knife vid from one of those if I remember correctly. Also a while back I came across this thread all about this file and some guy had his friend do an analysis on the steel makeup and it was very close to that of a icholson file (1095).So yea, Im no expert but for 3 bucks a pop for a big ass file that can be hardened(at leaast in my experience) you could mess around with those and see what ya get
-
@slipdisc Yea man Nicholson is deffinetley the way ta go cause now matter when the file was made or what type of file it is, it's gonna be good blade steel. Although, the Big individual files that they sell that say "India" on them, I annealed one, then cut off a feww pieces. One of them I hammered in its annealed state and it bent, (like it should) and on another piece I qunch tested it and when I smacked it with a hammer it snapped, (like good steel should) I looked at the crystal stucture.

@ArtistBlade1972 hah Thanks man. And no, I didnt get your message :-/ darn youtube. Things have been actin all... funky ..since they changed to the new looks,,it was a fine working wheel before and they hadda go try an reinvent it. but I'm glad ta hear it's not cause I scared ya off with all my questions lol

Looks very Murray Carteresque :) Nice job brother. I had sent you a message in response to that other message you sent me. A pretty long one at that. Did ya not get it?
-
@lsubslimed Thats really cool. I bought a large new imported set from hf with intentions of doing the same. It was only after annealing did I discover they were case hardened. The cores would never get hard (lol) no matter what you do. Lesson learned. Going all Nicholson or like quality this time.
Nice Blade! O and I like the vice also.

@cre8tivesolutions hey bro thanks for the kind words, it really encourages me. I do however hate to say that I ended up ruining the blade by filing away too much and just getting too carried away and perfecting it. Tim, however, being the great guy that he is , has sent me a new piece of steel free of charge so that I can still partake in this build along. I still havnt decided or come up with one yet but I do belive I'll be making a new design with a full convexed blade. Well see, Thanks :)

@lsubslimed.... just a note, the profile and bevel I was goin for really needs a bit more thickness to the blade, at least for my ability. I actually might settle on the design you see at the bottom of the paper that I've drawn on (you can see in the video) that has a scandi grind with a wharncliffe style profile. lol its hard for me to make my mind up cause I'm not used to workin with such thin and narrow blade stock. I really want to do a convex but .. meh like I said, well see lol
