http://www.crazyaboutcompost.com Composting at home is really easy. This is my quick instructional video on how to get your compost pile started at home with no hassles. It's fun, easy, and pretty darn rewarding if you ask me!

Since I live in the city, using a compost tumbler is the best choice for me. However, using a bin, worm trays, or just making a heap all have the following tips in common.

My top tips for composting at home:
-Stick to the 3:1 ratio for browns (leaves, cardboard, paper, straw) and greens (food waste, coffee grounds, grass clippings)
-Shred your materials to speed up decomposition and avoid clumping, which impedes airflow
-Pile should be moist as a "wrung out sponge"
-Turn your pile each week to hasten decay
-Add a shovelful of dirt to introduce essential organisms

AVOID composting:
-Meat, dairy, fish and excessively oily foods
-Plastics, glass & aluminum
-Pet waste
-Coal ash and charcoal
-Weeds that have gone to seed

FAQ:
Q: Pile isn't heating up.
A: Either add a fresh green source or if too dry add water.

Q: This pile stinks!
A: Add more browns and aerate.

  • I use alfalfa instead of the puppy food. It really heats the pile up

  • @pjgolf Alfalfa meal is great, highly recommended!

  • love the toilet in the background, is that for your manure?

  • @JensGarden1 No, I don't do the humanure thing yet, although I would like to. I renovated my bathroom and I have a hard time getting rid of things...even broken toilets.

  • I live in Texas and it's hot I feel I have good temp I can feel the heat when i open the door, just wondering how often should I add water and how much? I usually add about half a gallon every few days.

  • @justice2576 The amount of water you need to add will vary, but ultimately you want to keep the contents damp to the equivalent of a "wrung out sponge". I'm tired of hearing that expression, but it's the truth and I can't think of any other way to put it!

  • Santa just brought me the 18 bushel version tumbler! Ima gonna go craaaaaazy! :-D

  • Thanks again for the tip!

  • @justice2576 I essentially do the same thing...I collect leaves in my area and let them dry out for some time before I grind them up...works great!

  • I am still at it what I have been doing is setting my yard clippings to the side letting them dry and using them as browns.
