today i ballasted my pole pig with a microwave oven transformer and it draws about 13 amps from 120v and the arcs are much bigger.

  • why would you do this? your playing 7000 VOLTS !!!

  • Actually it's 14,400V ;)

  • i'm getting bigger arcs with my ballasted single mot... And where the hell did u get such a giant xformer? GREAT video BTW

  • Have you considered the fact that i *am* ballasting it with a small 1000W mot?

  • Well, that explains why you are getting longer arcs.

  • Nice one!

Ever tried to run that little monster with a bit more power? i.e. using two or more MOTs in parallel just to obtain bigger currents on the secondary?

And how about using a voltage doubler at the output? Pretty simple circuit. Get yerself some HV diodes and caps and google for "greinacher voltage doubler" ;)

  • thanks. Actually yesterday i tried out my new 25kva ballast. Unfortunately i am having some issues about the main wires to the house so as soon as i get that worked out i will post a vid. PS, the arcs stretched out to 3ft

  • Why are there people in here giving him a hard time about his age? If he is young, so what, the kid's obviously very skilled and knows what he is doing. Keep it up, and becareful.

  • Furthermore, if he is 10, by the time he is 20 he could probably build a entire grid. The key to making the most of your life is starting very young. I did too.

  • @BusyWithBiz Shit I was dickin around with electricity at his age. Never did get a pole pig though. lucky bastard. Anyway if the dude can do it safely and have fun at his age imagine what he's gonna be like once he gets out of EE school or something. Motherfuckers gonna be buildin tesla coils the size of skyscrapers. XD keep it up man.

  • Ndamukong Suh works out with one of those. A pole pig is perfect to put on a metal plate, put a sling around it and pull it. It will boost explosive strength. A good workout.

  • Ovie Mughelli has one of these.

  • @laqimak

No it can't, not unless one of the secondary leads is grounded. Also a NST is NOT isolated output. It is center point grounded. What makes the polepig xformer more dangerous is that it can handle putting out a LOT more power (that is if you reduce the current limiting to allow more current flow). A NST is internally current limited so nothing you do can increase it's output (short of increasing the input voltage, but that will overheat the NST).

  • NST is more safer then Pole Pig that can very easy KILL YOU. NST can kill only when you tuch secondary with both hands. And this Pig can kill you with just one tiny tuch. So use Pole Pig only if you knew what you are doing. If was on your place i would make one very big Tesla Coil. :) -Just do not do anything stupid. If you are planing some Tesla project just contact me.I will help you. :D

  • First off, where the hell did you get a pole pig? Second of all, why are your shorting it out? I've seen these things go off like a bomb. You are taking your life in your hands.

  • @BusyWithBiz Yes, he's obviously skilled but he's not using the standard safety gear and precautions that power company linemen use around these things. Occasionally even they get killed.

It would only take one teensy little mistake. Like having some dirt or moisture on that pole he's using. Or forget and leave the power on while he works on the high voltage connections.

At the very least he shouldn't work alone.

  • Are you in California? Pole pigs in most parts of the country seem to use single-ended pole pigs that operate between one primary phase and neutral, but here in California the standard practice is to use double-ended transformers like yours and connect them phase-to-phase. I assume the reason is that the drier climate means that grounds aren't as reliable. Where did you get your pole pig?

  • You're being fairly careful, but you could do better. Get AND USE a pair of power company lineman's gloves. Always test them; even a tiny pinhole can flash through. Also get AND USE a real "hot stick", a fiberglass pole with various attachments for manipulating fuses, bolts, clamps, etc.

Better yet, set everything up so you don't have to handle anything with your hands except the switch that turns it all on and off.

You obviously have a bright future, please don't throw it away.

  • @BusyWithBiz While working for the DOD I experimented at home and created a table top xray laser so as you can see this all will lead this boy to a bright future!! just make sure you are smart and safe at what you are doing with those lethal; voltages etc..... Good Luck!!!!
