Compassion Australia is encouraging Australian Christians to advocate and act on behalf of the thousands of Haitian children and their families now in desperate need of water, food and shelter after successive cyclones caused wide-spread destruction around the country.

The devastating cyclones sent wave after wave of torrential rain and wind across Haiti and its neighbours, causing mass widespread flooding and damage to roads and other infrastructure. So far more than 600 have been killed and over 650,000 left homeless with little access to food and clean water.

Haiti, the most impoverished nation in the Western Hemisphere, is the least able to cope with this devastation because of extreme poverty and a lack of infrastructure. In many areas what little infrastructure there was has now been destroyed along with homes, crops and livestock, said CEO of Compassion Australia, Paul ORourke.

Haitians are already suffering as a result of the global food crisis where escalating food prices are preventing hundreds of thousands of families from having enough food to feed their children. Now many have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods, plunging this already impoverished nation, into further despair.

Natural disasters have no regard for persons or seasons and the people of Haiti need our immediate help, said Paul ORourke. Compassion is making every effort possible to assist those most affected by the destruction whilst helping to rebuild and restore homes, lives and communities.

Compassion Australia has committed to raise $75,000 as part of Compassion Internationals combined US$1million to provide urgent emergency assistance and shelter for Compassion assisted families affected by the disaster.

  • Poor Haiti.... plagued by so many ills. The people don't deserve it.

  • I want to go there and help, but 'American Idol' is on. And I don't have DVR, so don't go there.

  • I wlil donate NOTHING, the Gov't already donated my money without asking.

When Haiti is a member of our Union, it will be eligible for Federal Aid. Until that day it should rely on private funds, or maybe European aid.

Perhaps Italy would care to pick up the tab? Italy doesn't seem to appreciate our efforts thus far, perhaps they would like to run the show, AND foot the bill?

  • i would donate....but i despise Haiti

  • I really want to help, but I need a new car, and my girlfriend needs a new diamond ring, because her girlfriend´s is bigger than the one I gave her last year. Also, I´m thinking about purchasing an off road bike, so sorry, not this quake. Maybe next time. Ha ha ha.

Stop giving these niggers aid. Let them learn to help themselves. Or do your white liberal bleeding hearts ache so that you just can´t help yourselves. White guilt must be a bitch.

  • I am fustrasted when I think about this as I want to give and help so much but literally give very little in order to support a relatively luxurious lifestyle. I guess I am like most politicians and in fact most people in this way. But I swear if I was a millionaire I would give most of it to help causes such as this one. Btw, when I say "little" expendable cash, It is £50 a week which is a fortune in many countries. This is a simple reflex of nature so the Haitan people do not deserve this.

  • Haiti is a relatively small country and needs International aid at this time as well as charity from organisations such as oxfam. After natural disasters such as this we must show our inheritant love for the rest of our species and simply do our best to help those who hve suffered from this event. I fell hypocritical in saying this as I have only bought a mug today from Oxfam giving 99p and could give more. But I am a student and decide to spend my little expendable cash on partying.

  • The west HATED Haiti EVER SINCE TOUSSAINT BURST THIER THROATS. THATS WHY THEY ARE THE POOREST COUNTRY IN THE WEST, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A COUNTRY SUCKED DRY BY ITS NEIGHBOURS AND THEN FORCED TO WAIT FOR HELP WHEN MOTHER NATURE STRIKES. SPAIN FRANCE ENGLAND PORTUGAL NORTH AMERICA GERMANY HOLLAND AND THE REST OF U SHALL FALL WITH ROME AND THE POPE,

  • haiti have a own government and can help itself own haiti country,,,

dont need to ask / depend on america

  • God still loves you anyway

  • im an evil atheist and i still donated
