This song is from the 'Eat a Peach" album and the first song the band did without Duane Allman, who died four months before it was released. The lyrics: "Crossroads, will you ever let him go" is perhaps a reference to Robert Johnson, blues guitarist, who went to a crossroad and solded his soul to the devil.

Ummm, no its not about that. I just read Greg Allman's Autobiograpy that he wrote & it's about a woman named Barbara that he really liked but couldn't have. An old woman in a convenience store called out Melissa to her Granddaughter & that is where he got "Melissa".

This song is about Robert Johnson and his blues guitar he named Melissa, Duane Allman wrote it and passed a few months before its release on eat a peach album. As to many today RJ is a legend and still to this day inspires people in their music. He was an inspiration to Duane.

A masterpiece! An earlier version was released in 68. It was different but as progression goes it culminated in what you hear now. Timeless,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

This was not written after Duane was killed, since the brothers performed it together back in 1968. But yes Gregg did get the title because he heard a mother calling out to her daughter

Great post...thanks for picking Melissa. This was written after Duane was killed on his bike in Atlanta. Greg was coming out of one of the local grocery stores and heard a lady yelling, "Melissa" while trying to find her daughter. Greg was filled with emotion upon hearing this and went home and wrote the song about Duane and the Harley he was killed on. Can't believe how time goes so fast. Peace, Surfer Joe

This song ended so quick the first 10 times I heard it. I have to keep listening to it. It's a numerous amount of times I've heard it now, but still, it never gets old.

Time. Oh, time. Where have you gone? Duane? Barry? Brothers? Oh man...
