Hundreds of Nigerian militants surrender their arms as part of a
federal amnesty program. The aim is to end unrest in the oil-producing Niger Delta.
Hundreds of Nigerian gunmen from various militant groups surrender their weapons. In return they will be granted with government amnesty.
The handover was the largest collection of weapons and ammunition since the president declared a 60-day federal amnesty programme.
He offers immunity from criminal prosecution to those who agree to lay down their arms.
Among the weapons were gunboats and rocket launchers.
The plan aims to end years of unrest in the oil-producing Niger Delta.
Militants say that a failure to develop the area would lead to a resumption of violence.
[Boyloaf, Former Senior Militant]: "As we lay down our arms today the struggle still continues but this time it will be a constructive discussion and dialogue of which we believe is the way forward."
The government say the programme seeks to disarm, educate and rehabilitate militants and criminals.
However, critics argue that the plan is not enough. They say the government has done little to create job opportunities for the former gunmen.
In addition new militants have started to take the place of those who retired while others senior commanders refuse to surrender.
Now the militants lay down there guns so that Nigerian can be in peace,so why is the north part of Nigerian killing christians and civilians in there place.the niger delta shouldn't have handed those guns to the government, they should have kept them at there possesion just incase.
