A very short tour of Morris Island, this is the way it looks today. What was there in 1863 is no more. Wish I had of shot more footage that day back in the early 1990's, this is all I have so I tried to put it together to make it as interesting as possible !

  • Thanks so much for your video!! I´m not American, but since I watched "Glory" for the very first time, I always wanted to know how Morris Island and especially the site of the Fort Wagner looked today ...and finally after all this tme my question got answered...thanks to you. But I can´t pass up the opportunity to ask you a question...is it true that there´s a sign marking where the fort stood?

    Once again, thanks for uploading!!!

Several people I have know who are native to Charleston or James Island say there was at one time a small concrete post or marker there at one time, but I have never seen it myself, it may have been covered by sand from Hurricane Hugo?? But, there is no sign there at all or any kind of official marker. On the other hand there a sign at the sight of the marking the location Swamp Angel Battery near Wagner. It is owned and protected by the Civil War Trust Group.

The good news is that what is called Morris Island today is in private hands, fortuantely it has escaped development a few times mainly because it is an isolated island and not lucrative to development. It is only accessable by boat. On the other hand James Island and Folly Island are heavily developed. The site of General Gillmore's headquarters is now under a large motel, the camps where the 54th and all of the other regiments stayed there are under houses.

  • I liked the video. But oddly I liked the natural sound at the ocean. I live in land and even at lakes and rivers the water sounds different than when you are at the Ocean. It brought back some nice memories for me.

  • God Bless the Charleston Battalion and the BRAVE DEFENDERS of Battery Wagner!

  • Hey, thankyou for this close up of Morris Island! I will be participating in the Fort Sumter 150th anniversary seige reenactment and would like to try and get to this island. I want to know how somebody gets out to Morris Island since their are no roads to it. Do you have to contact somebody with a boat? Is there a company who offers rides out there? Thanks for any information you could give me and thanks for this vid!

  • whoa! it's all gone now, huh?

crazy that there's been no mass excavation and I guess all the tropical looking trees explains the southern flag that was used by the Confederate forces there.

    thanks for this.

  • Thank you for doing this.

  • Morris Island now belongs to the City of Charleston and is open to the public. The fort is no longer visible due to erosion, hurricanes, and wind; although some historians belive some of the area that was the western side of Fort Wagner is still on dry land. Cummings Point has never been excavated so no one knows what is really there buried beneath the sands.

  • Wow, Morris Island´s privately owned. So do visitors to the island require entry approval prior to travel???? Can visitors see how it looks today what once was Battery Wagner????

    Great video. Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Well, at least there´s some good news, but tell me if Morris Island is in private hands, may it be visited freely today? and if so, how can a tourist know where the fort stood if there is no sign there?

    Thanks again for your reply.

  • Thanks for your reply SandhillDigger. I used to think that after the movie many would be interested in knowing where fort Wagner stood so there would be some kind of sign on the island showing the location. In my humble opinion, a historic site like this one- now known worldwide - should be protected as Swamp Angel Battery is. It´s a pity what happens to fort Wagner !!!
