The community knew him as Uncle Bill.
Private Lundy was born near Troy, Pike County, Alabama, 18 January 1848, (also reported at Coffee Springs, Coffee County, Alabama). He enlisted in the last days of March, 1864, at age 16; Company D (Brown's), 4th Alabama Calvary Regiment (Home Guard) at Elba, Alabama; and was honorably discharged at Elba, in the State of Alabama, in May 1865, on account of close of war.
He was the last surviving Confederate soldiers residing in Florida, and one of three (all Confederate) Civil War veterans in the United States.
At the age of 109, Private Lundy died at Crestview, Okaloosa County, Florida, on September 1, 1957. He is interred at Almarant Cemetery, Laurel Hill, Florida
@atrophyfilms2012 Also, we should remember , at that time the state was much more sovereign than now. Then, one's state was much like one's country today. Throughout the war, the core of the Confererate ( by God ) Army was, in fact, the Army of Northern Virginia. Lee was a patriot, to Virginia.

@lewisclark1800 Robert E. Lee refused Lincoln's offer to lead the Union army, not because he was a traitor, but because he refused to fight against his state - Virginia - which had seceded. If I was in his shoes, I would have done the same. Lee was anti slavery, anti secession. But he refused to attack his own friends and family.

God bless your great grandfather. I'm sure he's up there with all his War buddies talking about how ridiculous the world is today. People get mad at me when I say I'd fight for the South, but who cares what the think? they don't understand. The Confederates aren't a bunch of racist hicks; we're the spirit of America and the heart of our nation's history. 2 of my great great grandfathers were fighting for Georgia. Thanks, I neede to see this :)

I am a cousin to William Barret Travis and Mark Twain.
I am a 4XSon of the Confederacy. My Grandfathers were in the 1st South and 20th South Carolina Volunteers. I am very proud they were the first to join from our first state. They were great brave men all of our beloved Southerners...God Bless from TEXAS.

I would like to weigh in on this discussion but it is too much of a name calling session than a discussion. Those that believe the issue of slavery in America wasn't the main reason for the war I can't say I agree with that. Abraham Lincoln himself even said it was so ill take his word over yours.
