In this video I show you how I removed the 2TB Western Digital WD20EARS drive from it's external USB 2 enclosure to be left with a bare 2TB SATA drive - ready for use in my Unraid server.
----------

My 16TB Unraid server is filling up and I need more space (who doesn't?) Unfortunately, due to the Thailand flooding, the price of hard drives has sky rocketed over the last month or so. 2TB Western Digital green drives that were going for around $70 are now priced at around triple that cost.

Most of the info I have read seems to indicate that it will be quite a number of months before prices ease up.

With some careful shopping at the retail level you can still find external drives for much lower prices. I found 6 2TB drives (various brands) at several stores - all for around $100 each. I plan on removing the drives from their enclosures to use as internal SATA drives.

  • I bought one of these in 2010 black friday sale for 70 dollars on sale and I'm going to put it into a eSATA enclosure. Thanks for this video!

I can't believe how expensive hard drives have gotten because of one plant being flooded.

  • oh yea what model no. did you buy?

  • Thanks for the helpful video. I agree the 1 year warranty sucks, but there might be a workaround. If you buy the drive from a website that offers the option to buy a SquareTrade extended warranty, you only pay like $17-20 more for a 3 year warranty. I haven't used SquareTrade but it's supposed to be very good, no hassle, full parts and labor warranty. I know tigerdirect(dot)com offers the SquareTrade warranty when you buy hard drives. Might be something worth considering.

  • will transferring my 2tb model to an internal hard drive cause me to lose my files/have to reformat the hard drive? or will i just take it out of the case, plug it in and it work as it has been working b4?

  • omg i never open my hdd drive :D u are master for open i have and how money can earn more for SATA open remove the sata drive from external to unraid server ??? how money is that more ???

  • The extended PCB adapter connect the actual HDD to USb and power socket. Is there a place to sell that ? cos mine is fired. Not talking about the big PCB under the HDD, the one attached at the end of the HDD as adapter.

  • Thanks for explaining. This is what i was searching for in case i'm going to buy a nas casing.

  • Nice! So easy! These were on sale a while ago for $90, and I kicked myself for not getting more than one.

  • Thanks, i did exactly just that!

  • in australia a 500gb blue internal is $110
