how to convert your bike to tubless using the "ghetto" method

part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRM7gq1fcoQ

Step 1: prepping your rim

Step 2: stretch tube over your rim

Step 3: unfold tube over the rim and clean off the powder

Step 4: mount your tire

Step 5: see if the tire will inflate on your rim

Step 6: dismount second bead and apply sealant... then remount bead

Step 7: apply soap and water *DO NOT skip this step

Step 8: shake it down and lay it flat

Step 9: shave off excess tube

Step 10: throw them on and ride! Be careful to check tire pressure before every ride.

so for those of you wondering what the advantages of tubeless tires is... here they are.
- ability to run lower tire pressure without having to worry about pinch flats. which results in better traction and lower rolling resistance.
- takes weight off the outer most part of the wheel. which is where it requires the most torque / force to spin the tire. ie. lower rolling resistance.
- with sealant in your tires, you dont have to worry about puncture flats.
- there's more. those are the hightlights. do your own research.

  • Thanks Linga. One question, do you have troubles with the sealant blocking the valve so you can't get air in the tire? Thanks.

  • @Chandriko

never had trouble getting air through the valve. been using this system for 3 years now. still on original strips from the video.

  • what kind of sealant is used, just any brand? does anyone know, or have tried, if this works on road wheels? does the sealant do any cosmetic damage to the rim?

great video, better than the other one I just watched.

  • @joerdm1991

i use stans no tubes sealant. there are tubless road wheelset / combos out in existence. however i have not tried using this method on any road combo what so ever. so i cant say how well it works for road wheels.

  • will this still work for a bmx wheel???

  • @bike4life1515 it should but i have not tried it personally. so i cant comment too much on it

  • How does this give you an advantage? Like... I don't understand what you gain from doing this... if you run over a nail, your tire is still going to pop, and you won't even be able to take it off. Plus you would have to replace the tread, and those a a lot more expensive than tubes.... Not trying to be an ass here, I just don't understand... please explain why someone would want to do this?

  • the second i saw he was chinese i left

  • I've read many times to use motor oil or grease instead of soap and water to lube and seat the tire due to internal corrosion issues though this is all related to automotive tires so it may not apply here. I still suspect an oil or grease will seat it better. You could even use a cooking oil.....

  • so if i have a 20 inch rim i need a 18 inch tube

  • and after alllll that u catch a flat outdoors and ur fucked

  • what's the point of this system? is it actually lighter than a regular tube? do you have to use a tubeless tire?

  • @R1200cPhoenix If you are running rim brakes you need to cut it.

  • @litomeanbear if there will be any puncture, the air will escape

  • what if i dont put any sealant in?

  • In the time that it took do do all this, the dogs completed the singletrack loop, gulped back a beer, and had sex.
