Sifu Rudy Curry Jr share his experience in this interview about the jail house rock an urban african american street style known today as the 52 blocks.
Sifu Rudy school of thought on the 52 blocks:
Each state prison system essentially the same is different. Fighting styles change form area to area and era to era. But a fight is a fight by any other name or style. Prison is not much different from outside and anyone can sneak attack someone anywhere aside from the guns. However, the style called 52 in NY was rare though even everyone on the corner who had ever went to prison claimed a little skill with the style I only met two who really knew it. One was known for his skill in fighting multiple opponents and was handy with a razor. He and I only had a few discussions and used to enjoy watching each other handle other folks. Our mutual respect kept us in neutral mode learning from each others principles. He was nick named after an infamous judge known for letting repeat offenders out of prison. "Cut em' loose Bruce". The other was a guy from Brooklyn. I was in my early years training and had a reputation for beating some of the best so challenges started coming from various quarters. It was interesting and I lucked up using a Ba Gua move and taking him down with some kind of arm bar wristlock combo. I got wide berth in the street after that. I haven't met anyone else who really knew the style since the Mid 80's
