One important area of personal health management is testing your cholesterol levels.

Anyone over 20 should have their levels checked and there is now a range of over the counter home tests that can monitor these accurately. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist which test is most suitable before you buy. The kits will come with easy to follow instructions, and give accurate results in about three minutes. Make sure you read the manufacturers guidelines carefully before proceeding with any tests.

The kit should contain the sealed test, a lancet, plaster and the set of instructions.

High cholesterol significantly increases the risk of having a heart attack. Cholesterol is an oily substance which is a building block for manufacturing many of the body's vital chemicals.

The main reason for high cholesterol levels in this country is a poor or unhealthy diet. It's important to know what your cholesterol level is, as high levels can go undetected for a long time and become noticeable when it blocks blood vessels.

There are two types of cholesterol in the body - LDL, which deposits cholesterol in arteries of the heart. HDL type actually removes cholesterol from the blood, reducing the risk of a heart attack.

Some test kits show total cholesterol, others total and HDL cholesterol levels. Results on most kits are easy to interpret, reporting low, Ok or high levels.

Ideally measure your cholesterol on an empty stomach. Some kits require you to fast for 12 hours before carrying out the test.

The kit gives you all the equipment needed to collect a finger prick sample of whole blood - if your cholesterol levels are high, you must consult your GP for further tests, and if you have any concerns about the test itself, you should seek advice from a medical professional.

  • You have to love the cholesterol fake science.

FACT: There is little connection between diet and blood levels of cholesterol.

FACT: HDL and LDL are cholesterol transport proteins.

HDL carries Cholesterol out from the liver, LDL transports it back for recycling.

Low fat diet forces the liver to make cholesterol since it is essential in the body. This actually inhibits fat metabloism and causes weight gain. Simple biochemistry.

Eat low carbs, animal fats and veg. Live long and prosper.

  • Over 20!!! please...this is just an advert...the science is still in doubt about cholesterol.

there is a cult called nutritionism started by the multi bazillion $ medical pharmaceutical industrial complex. It posits that the medical pharmaceutical industrial complex understands how the human body works and how food is related to its workings and how their nasty fake factory chemicals can augment nature. They simply lie to sell products. Eat natural, forget corporate lies

  • for this beautiful woman also Dracula can test her, if the bat starts to choke, the your cholesterol is way to high.

  • Taking statins have crippled me

  • My Cholesterol rose up when I saw the girl's cleavage!! lol

  • They don't sell these at home kits in the USA, do they?

  • @modig52

As I said above... read Barry Groves and Garry Taubes. You'll learn why.

    Statins nearly killed me.

  • @ski9k

Of course she is. They want to pull you in and make you believe the baloney surrounding the cholesterol myth. There are some misleading statements here. Instead of watching this read Barry Groves and Gary Taubes, on the subject of fat in the diet, and cholesterol. They explain the science properly.

  • I want to know why, after 3 months following a strict cholestral lowering diet suggested by my doctor, my cholestral went from 6 to 6.4. I swam 3 miles a week and cycled everywhere and lost 8lb in weight. I was put on simvastatin because my doc said my gain must be 'genetic'.

  • @dreamsaver321 remember that these tests can only show the RISK of heart attack. I had VERY high cholesterol for years and yet ultrasounds of my renal arteries and an ECG showed ZERO build up of fatty deposits on my arteries (all FACTS). The difference probably (now the conjecture starts) was because I have an extremely good diet devoid of anything that might inflame my arteries. I THINK the trick is to remember garbage in = garbage out.
