Peggy Fleming - 1968 Olympics LP

Many thanks to quillerpen for the DVD.
This is a near complete LP in great quality. There's about 20 seconds missing just before her flubbed lutz jump. However the rest is lovely and while not her best skate - 1968 Nationals was the performance of her career - it's still a great historical moment in the history of Figure Skating. The couple commentating on this performance in retrospect are Carlo and Christa Fassi, Peggy's coaches.

All sport has evolved and exceeded their pioneers - every human endeavor does that. Give Peggy her props! These people were AMATEUR champions -an extinct species - They didn't have the computer aided training, scientifically balanced diets, supplements, focused kinetic and isometric training....etc...Think about it! Today, we have high school track athletes who would outrun and out throw Jim Thorpe and Jesse Owens. Does that mean we shouldn't respect their accomplishments? OF COURSE NOT!

You simply can't compare an earlier era with a later one. I DO associate Peggy Fleming's image with a generation that's about to send many manned missions to the Moon and safely return every one.

Also, those aren't news casters, those are Peggy Fleming's coaches, the famous Carlo and Christa Fass, who are giving a retrospective on Fleming's performance. Unless you're talking about today's television news caster being better than the ones before, but that's a non-sequitur.

There is A LOT of technical stuff nowadays, but I'm not saying that all the skaters are good with it. However, I do feel that a lot of the artistry in the sport is lost nowadays, as skaters are wanting to get additional points.

your wrong theirs no technical stuff today that's the problem. today's skaters couldn't begin to skate against Peggy Fleming. she wipe the ice with them.

I don't think so. Very few skaters can match her artistry as everything is so technical nowadays.

I remember as a kid watching this with my friend, who said, in front of my parents...I bet she never farts. Cracked us up.

The whole 1968 Olympic Womens figure skating is on youtube. it's off russian tv it's 47 minutes long. peggy starts at 16 minutes. you even see her numbers she got.

This is missing the entire 2nd section to quick 'Traviata' music. The Soviet TV feed of the full program is now available on YouTube. Peggy underrotated several jumps, not just the excised 2-lutz. Still, she skated with more flow & grace than anyone else.

I don't see any skating nowadays that rivals this for artistry and skating skills. And this was not one of Peggy's better performances.
