This dredge I made around 1985. It was the end result of three attemps culminating it what i feel is an ideal fine gold catcher. The nozzle is 5 inch, and just behind the nozzle the lift pipe flares out to 6 inch. The idea of this is to slow the flow. The 6 inch pipe lands onto the front of the dredge through a small flare - this exit point is 10 inches - from here the table flares out to 24 inches over the 6 foot length of the table. 70 percent of the gold will stop in the first 2 foot of the table. The idea of starting with small and flaring out to large is to slow the flow and allow fine flour flood gold to settle. The dredge is powered one of my imported Chinese 6.5hp petrol motors coupled to a PROLINE HP300 55psi pump giving more than adequate pressure and volume for the suction nozzle. This motor/pump is running at around half throttle in this movie. The pontoons are from a 4 inch Proline dredge pack.

  • Docs control over the rivers can mean dredging times can be to their whim - fish eggs and things.... trampling some types of plants... can get tricky so if you were thinking of Doc held land a good in depth talk with them first before sending the application is needed - as I found out. Cheers Allan.

  • @Nasase - Can depend on and if you can do your own paper work without getting a third party in to do it for you. I have done three of them now over the years and they are a hell of a lot easier to do now than they were in the 1980's. Costs: I have a feeling I had to send with the application a cheque for $2500 with no warranties of getting any of it back.

  • With Crown land you have to make a contact with LINZ I think it is to make sure that you can have access to the river over the Crown lease land - you can also go to the lease holders which is probably the best starting point as they probably might like to find you walking over the land.... even if LINZ has granted permission. Most of the crown land not under lease will be in DOCS control and they can be a bit different

  • So what does it cost to actually get a permit to use a Dredge on Crown owned river/stream land? It seems like there isnt any avenues for small hobbiests to go out and have a crack at it.

  • All is above Nasase - ran out of room for a one go reply :-)
