A lot of increasing activity at Katla Volcano - And strange lights observed last night on Katla Webcam 1/11/2010 -

Katla webcam went down during the night and has still not come back on...

Also a lot of earthquakes to the western flank of Katla today.

Activity increases beneath the Myrdalsjokull glacier which is home to the Katla Volcano. The volcanic in nature earthquakes to the western flank of the volcano which are producing active p-waves, are indicitive of a strong healthy magma chamber. Extperts say that Katla is joined to the Eyjafjallajokull volcano whose underground chambers are connected and related.

Historically, Katla always erupts following an eruption from Eyjafjallajokull. The mayor of Iceland has said, "It's not if she will blow, It's when!" -

Eyjafjallajokull caused havoc to the UK airline systems earlier this year, in particular, when a giant ash-cloud drifted over the United Kingdom and Europe. New rules were written about the acceptable levels of ash in the air and when it was safe to fly, after much moaning by the British Aviation of a weeks cancelled flights and much money lost!!

Eruption is still ongoing at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland and it is still producing an ash plume, though it is much smaller than before.

Volcanic ash had been known to take a plane down after the miniscule pieces of glassy ash had been known to clog and shut down the engines of planes mid flight..

Katla is Iceland's second largest volcano, next to the formidable Queen of the Icelandic volcanoes, Hekla.. If either of these two seriously erupt, we are in BIG trouble...

  • have you seen the photo of a high wave frozen in action?!! Its several feet high & not doubt something quite fantastic or horrifying froze it before it even started on its way down! Its on youtube. Believe you can see it by searching "frozen wave artic". The color of the water frozen in this wave is quite beautiful. Spectacular to see! Thez lights look like the aurora borealis in black & white. Very strange indeed...thanks for sharing & bringing this to our attention. God be wyou always!

  • Katla typically has more earthquakes in September-October and generally more than normal in November, before it calms down. Earthquakes on the western flank, outside the Caldera rim near Godabunga are known to be related to the glacier as they occur within the uppermost kilometer usually. If any happen in the caldera then that's something more interesting.

The latest Katla has erupted after Eyjafjallajokull has been 18 months so theres still plenty of time for this monster to erupt!

  • It's possible to watch live webcam from katla at ruv .is/katla

  • the first light, it's called the northern lights. it can be seen on every clear sky at night.

  • I'm from iceland. There's absolutely nothing going on. the lights you're looking at are probably trucks on their way over the glacier. the increased earthquake activity is normal in the fall and beginning of the winter, it's not some activity under the glacier, it's the glacier itself.

  • @ChristiannaGarrett1 maybe a check.by"supervisor" at the incoming eruption?

  • great video!my friend, thumbs up

  • Now that is somewhat alarming having seen that in one of my dreams. Those lights are more than what they appear to be but are also spirits as the pit is opening up.
