The father of "four handsome and talented sons," community leader Hayes is the founder and creative director of the Urban Arts Institute of Asheville, a free youth program in offering dance, drama, video and music programs, as well as mentorship, to youth in underserved Asheville communities. Meeting for three hours a day five nights a week, and requiring participants to maintain good grades, UAI gives young people an opportunity to collaborate, mentor one another, and be part of meaningful performance experiences that knit our community together through art, creativity and the joy of self expression.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
