May 11, 2007— A noisy crow court drew me into the Mill Creek Ravine with my MD recorder and camera. It was chaos. The murder eventually flew away, and I guess this poor, gurgling guy was the murder's victim. He flew up, feebly clutched at a branch, then glided head-first into a spruce. I spent the next hour beside him watching him die. It was beautiful, but not pretty.

A CROWS' COURT
Crows occasionally gather in a circle with one in the middle, head bowed submissively. The outer birds fall silent... The center crow begins to caw and the rest seem to listen. Then either the court disperses or a smaller group of up to half a dozen birds will pursue and kill the defendant bird with deafening uproar. The defendant bird is usually killed as cleanly as possible with blows to the head and neck.
Hence a flock of crows is often called a "murder of crows".
Creepy-cool.
