"Sticks and stones may break my bones (but words will hurt forever)"
-John Dorian

@triangl Words hurt, they can really hurt someone.
-
@triangl simple: because it's easaier to be said than done. "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" even adult people without syndroms have trouble with putting these words into practice. Some people are fragile, as many kids with syndroms are. The solution must be something short and concrete. John & Co. know it's not much but they're doing the best they can.

The problem is, "retarded" was the word used by people who worked with special needs children thirty years ago, and it became a playground insult, and then it becomes offensive. In Britain, "special needs" is now a playground insult, and it used to be the official term. It's a cycle that never ends. So instead of letting a word hurt you, and trying to stop people saying that word, why don't we go back to teaching our kids "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me"

Huh never really thought of it like that, don't think I ever really say it but I'll make a note not too. maybe gettin the message 3 years late but least its been recieved :P

@JWFernel disparage?
You're aware it's the focking official term, right? It's not bad unless you use it in the wrong way. Geez.
