The March of Dimes has funded a series of controversial experiments, including an infamous study in which newborn kittens had their eyelids sewn shut for many months before being killed in an attempt to study the effects of visual deprivation. The March of Dimes itself admits that this study yielded no clinically relevant advances. More recently, the March of Dimes sponsored experiments in which pregnant monkeys were given uterine infections, then tethered to a cage by monitoring cables that ran through the animals' uteruses and into their babies' bodies. In another MOD-funded experiment, researchers severely restricted water intake of pregnant sheep. While the March of Dimes has continued to sink money into questionable animal experiments, the real advances in birth defects research have come from human studies.

  • I'm not saying that animals are worth more than a human's life, but animal testing is responsible for babies' deaths, too. For example, "The antibiotic streptomycin was tested on dogs, guinea pigs, and pigs and deemed "safe" for people. But infants who were given the drug suffered brain damage, went deaf or blind, or died." Animals are so different than people that the research is irrelevant.

  • Everyone who emails me asking me for a donation to the MOD gets from me a friendly no thank you and a link to this video!

  • I would NEVER give a donation to the March of Dimes or any other charity that uses animals in experiments. Animals are not ours to use in experiments or for food or in any other manner.

  • BOO!! I will not be giving any money to March of Dimes. If the experiments actually equated to real usable data that prevented infant deaths, than maybe so, but there is nothing that can be gained from animal experiments. Actually make neo-natal care available and accessible, that will help people, educate mothers on proper nutrition. That's a start right there!

  • dont forget the bunny in the microwave and the chips in dogs brains. also, forcing monkeys to take drugs such as cigars and cigaretts

  • Ditto that, sanyp!

There are many organizations conducting medical research to find cures for human disease that do not use animals.

Technology is so advanced, we need not do it any longer.

  • It's sad the March of Dimes is guilty of worthless, yet cruel experimentation. I have been a supporter for a number of years, but that ends now. I know they did good things years ago, but current statistics say they are using 25% of the money to raise more money and their management seems to get paid a lot. Much of the rest goes for unnecessary and cruel experiments on animals that provide no benefit. Change your tactics!
