microtubules grow and shrink from the + end only, not both ends. (I'm Molecular Bio PhD student at Berkeley)

If microtubules grow and shorten at the same end, how is it that when they are shortening (depolymerizing) the microtubules are still attached to the centromere/kinetochore? If tubulin is being released at the end, wouldn't the centromere/kinetochore be released too?
