In 2010 scientists reported in Nature that the spotted salamander is the first vertebrate species to have a symbiotic relationship with green algae (like coral do). Just look at the egg mass. The females have algal spore of a particular species in their oviducts; when the embryo produces enough CO2, the algae begins to reproduce and from then on, the two species exchange gases. Like green cat's eye marbles in the mass of transparent jelly. Here in NE Alabama I watched the full cycle.
