This is a video on how to clean and lubricate the front derailleur of a bike. In the process, it also demonstrates how to use products from Finish Line Technologies, Inc., including the Easy Pro Brush Set, Speed Clean Speed Degreaser, Teflon Dry Lube, and Extreme Fluoro Grease. The video consists of three parts: how to brush off a derailleur, how to spray it down and dry it off, and how to lubricate it. For more repair tips, go to www.finishlineusa.com and www.maintainthatride.blogspot.com. A version of this video with a printable guide can be found at www.howcast.com/users/caeasura.

  • great vids,i do pretty much exactly the same as all your vids but use wd40 for all steps:)

do you work for finish line? or get free products for the vids?

    keep up the good work

  • Well met, Mr. Lowdangle. Yes, I work for Finish Line, in marketing, to be precise, though I'm also kind of the resident mechanic. I've worked as a bike shop mechanic and service manager for about 12 years, and these videos are intended to represent what I would normally do durng the course of a repair or drive train cleaning. They're more about the method than the products, though sometimes the two are one and the same. As for WD40, I find it easier to use products that are purpose-built....

  • 'well met' hehe ..i havnt seen that in ages

i wasnt having a dig btw, nothing wrong with promoting a product, especially if its good at what it does. the cleaning spray looks well nifty

I only use wd40 for everything cos im bit of a cheapskate and its what ive got..maybe not ideal, but it does seem to do the job in most cases

  • No worries....I didn't think you were having a dig. And I understand about the WD40. I've used it myself in a pinch, and it works for a bit of everything, at least for a while. Finish Line has something similar, a cleaner and lubricant called 1-Step. It'll do a good job of cleaning your chain, and it'll also do a great job of removing grease from your chainstays. Mostly, though, it's an excellent lubricant, vastly superior to a lot of the all-purpose lubes out there. Might be worth a try....

  • talk about impractical, just buy a new bike

  • @caeasura Nice to see some reasonable people on youtube for once.

  • Oh please.... Stop that excessive use of canned oil/degreaser.

  • i went to a car wash and washed my bike.. I gave it a once over with some engine degreaser, and then used the tyre/engine was from the car wash.

It totally made it shine, all the dirt and gunk has left the bike and the chain is spotless.

I am just not certain if the fluid from the cleaner can get in side the hubs and cause damage

  • WD-40, developed by Rocket Chemical Company 1953,water displacement 40th attempt.

It will also safely de-ice your ICBMs.

I must go now and grease the front derailleur before it is too late.

My bike hangs on a repair stand when I'm not riding. This vid tells me that I am not using the stand for its intended purpose often enough. :)

  • if your chain is rusted you'll need a new one, no amount of cleaning will help.
