Visit my website http://www.banjocrazy.com/ where I offer Gold Tone banjos and other instruments by Gold Tone at the most competitive prices.

In this video I'm playing a 5-String Cello Banjo, CEB-5. The Cello Banjo, an early American instrument, was nearly extinct when Gold Tone recently brought back to life, which is how I became involved with Gold Tone as an independent product specialist. My background is a multi-instrumentalist concert performer, and I find that I can actualize many of my musical interests on this one rather mysterious-sounding instrument. It's tuned an octave lower than a normal banjo - with wound nylon strings - and has a very different sound that I find quite appealing.

On my website - http://www.banjocrazy.com/ - I have exclusive interviews with banjoists such as Adam Hurt, Cathy Fink, Bob Carlin, Marcy Marxer and others.
I recorded and co-produced with Adam Hurt his successful solo gourd banjo CD, entitled "Earth Tones," which is available on cdbaby.com.

"Dodi Li," is a fabulous song from the Jewish tradition, with Biblical lyrics from the Song of Songs. I play it as a dance tune and the cello banjo is a really fun vehicle to deliver its exuberant message. It's a sweet, lyrical melody - the kind of Middle Eastern sound that I find so appealing.

The tuning is gCGCD. I'm playing clawhammer style.

For more information on the *Cello Banjo* check out the many articles and interview I have posted on my website - http://www.banjocrazy.com/

Thanks for listening : )

  • Wow, haven't heard cello banjo before, the sound is great! I'll have to try one next time I get the chance!

  • @adancingfool Thanks for your comment. Make sure the head is tightened quite a bit to get a good strong sound out of the low register where this thing resides. Also the gauge and age of strings makes a big difference, as does the right hand playing position.
