"Let Me Sing And I'm Happy" from the film 'Mammy'.
Jack Hodges (Baritone).
Recorded ,1930.

A song always associated with Jolson, but in 1930 shallow British pockets would just as easily have opted for this version by a competent baritone on the cheaper Sterno label retailing at one shilling and threepence i believe?.

Jack Hodges is the baritone that some Spike Milligan fans may recall from the BBC TV series "Q" during the 1970's - 'Everything Is Fresh Today' ??!!.

A long time favourite this particular record and as good as Jolson, well, I think so anyway. Possibly Nat Star's band accompanying Hodges here?.

  • @Loobs666 yes, because nothing says mosh pit like classic jazz

  • Love this track... it deffo needs a Mosh Pit tho!

  • could someone post the lyrics?

  • Sir Robert Peel and his Band! Wow! He must have been about 200 years old when he went into the studios. I had no idea he was a musician. Something he had in common with Ted Heath, another musical prime minister/bandleader. At least there wouldn't have been any nonsense in the place with all his coppers around. I like this song, it's bright and cheery with a nice band too, I wonder if it was Nat Star's as he recorded on Sterno? And a cracking gramophone too!

  • Very pleasing version, and is definately played at the correct speed

  • What a cheery song, hearing it encuraged me to play a few other Jack Hodges's records. He also sings the vocal chorus on one side by Sir Robert Peel & his band Also played Sterno dance version - Bert Maddion (Nat Star). Thanks for making this record available.

  • Never heard of him-and do not think this is played at the wrong speed at all.Very good though i always think of the Jolson version.

  • Very good,anymore of this singer,with a touch of Noel Coward pronunciation,s.

  • Such a great song. I enjoyed it.

  • I enjoyed the music "SOUNDS" was at least on "KEY", but sort of to me~this 1930S'singer had a slightly lower pitch "VOICE".....
