After last being seen winning a pair of stakes races at Del Mar last summer, Bench Points moved his career mark to a perfect 4-for-4 in his return to the races by capturing a six furlong allowance optional claiming event at Santa Anita.
The three-year-old son of Benchmark trained by Tim Yakteen and ridden for the first time today by Alonso Quinonez was sent off as the 5-to-2 second choice in the short field of four, but was able to wear down 3-to-10 favorite Da Ruler through the stretch and cross the wire just over a length in front.
The win will surely move him up from No. 28 on Horse Racing Nation's 2011 Kentucky Derby Contenders list.
His next test is likely to come going two turns for the first time in the Grade II $250,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 12. http://www.horseracingnation.com/polls/current/kentucky_derby_2011_contenders
