With the 2010 soccer World Cup now decided, Chomsky Allstars throw a harsh spotlight on South Africa's attempts to 'beautify' the country in the run-up to the tournament.
Blending punk, blues, dance, dub and Afrobeat, 'The Beautiful Gain', with its infectious melody and sublime rhythms, is set to become the 'Free Nelson Mandela' of the 21st century, with a proportion of the song's proceeds donated to South Africa's anti-eviction campaigners.

  • I guess I'm one of those "idiots" who enjoys football! Seriously, of course you can be proudly red, socialist and enjoy the people's game. But too bad our SA government but especially the SA trade unions who should have kept their eye on the ball from the beginning! They snoozed, our workers lost.

  • @kennedyronald Similar story here in the UK too, give or take the odd exception...

  • > With all eyes fixed on the soccer World Cup

all the idiots' eyes .. maybe, but probably not even that

    all eyes CERTAINLY not

  • Er ... it's not just idiots that watch football, my friend. It used to be the working class game until they gentrified it and turned it into a billion-dollar commodity. One of the greatest thinkers the game ever produced was Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, who said: 'the socialism I believe in is everyone working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. It's the way I see football, the way I see life.' He'd be turning in his grave.

  • @chomskyallstars Brother-yer talking my language!

  • Playing is one thing, watching something totally different.By playing, you become the participant, aware of himself and his team.By watching, you let others lead you.

  • @chomskyallstars Football is(or,has to be if you want to win)about working FOR THE TEAM.Clearly socialist.Individualism is expressed by other sports, like say, boxing. However,it got turned, like many other things, from an enjoyment and at the same time a sport teaching lessons, into a consumer product.

  • Amazing, thank you.

  • Whether you love football or not Blikkiesdorp is a disgrace!

  • @chomskyallstars

obviously there's a huge difference between participating in any kind of sport and watching/consuming (esp. with 'eyes fixed') 'sports'-M$-circus-events, the latter an alienated form, (neurotic) ERSATZ (sensu W.Reich, R.Taeni, E.Fromm)

And (panem et)circenses is not just a harmless distraction, but it serves a specific purpose (of diversion+opression), helps to keep masses docile; has e.g. been described(imho correctly) as 'exercise in irrational jingoism' by Noam Chomsky...
