A live wide-mono recording.
Having assisted Mahler in preparing the 1910 premiere of his symphony #8 in Munich, Otto Klemperer then developed an outstanding career as a conductor which shows to the full in this Bruckner 8th symphony from 1957.

  • Interesting performance, not the best sound quality, rather peculiar balances, but I always enjoy listening to this work, and I think that most if not all listeners really prefer the Nowak version as representing Bruckner's final thoughts on the work. I am only unhappy that in places Klemperer chsoe to speed things up unaccountably, for me ruining the inevitable

and steady progress of the work, Bruckner's greatest.

  • @mrsneaky2010 This only shows that we all here various works in very different ways.

You prefer the Haas perhaps because you are used to it. But I must tell you that it was historically determined to be a corrupt text with a lot of material in it that Bruckner actually did not write. The Nowak is considered by most conductors and rightfully I think to be the final word on Bruckner's true wishes. As for the performance, I feel that in places Klemperer tends to unaccountably speed things up.

  • Very good!!.pity he chose the Nowak version over the Haas..Nowak always sounds a little truncated to me!..but like the quick tempo of the coda!!..
