Player Comment:
The watery world of Mer is threatened by the deadly Dark Water. Prince Ren and his companions must find the Treasures of Rule to control the Dark Water and return Mer to its former glory.
Always hot on their heels is the evil pirate-lord Bloth who wants to find the treasures to rule over Mer.

Based on a cartoon series by the same name, The Pirates of Dark Water is a side scrolling fighting game similar to Final Fight or Streets of Rage.

The player chooses a character, from among Prince Ren and his two companions Tula and Ioz, who differ in strength and agility, but who use the same basic attacks. There are two attack buttons, one for fast attacks and combinations and one for a single heavy attack. Other controls include: blocking attacks, grabbing and throwing opponents, dash attacks while running, and a special attack that hits multiple enemies consuming life energy at the same time. Most levels also require you to avoid obstacles like chasms, falling rocks or spikes that shoot out of the ground.

  • LOL the music in this game is so trippy

  • It's impossible to play with Ioz in hard. he's very VERY slow, and the enemies are really really fast in hard.

  • Ioz is broken. He can just pick up anyone and chuck them down pits. its great.

  • Fuck I didnt know Dark Water got a cool beat em' up! This game is actually good!

  • @Beelzeboogie Same here. I wish that Sunsoft had the rights to do develop and publish a SWATKATS beat'em up, like they did to this game.

I just checked the Credits Repository Archive on GDRI, and it turns out this game is a collaboration between Sunsoft of Japan and Sunsoft of America. Sunsoft of Japan did most of the work, while Sunsoft of America did the debug work, marketing and the quality assurance.

I swear, why can't Japan do licensed games anymore?

  • @JPerez9011 It doesn't! At least THIS version wasn't developed by the Non-Japanese like the Sega Genesis version.

This one was a collaboration effort between Sunsoft of America and Sunsoft of Japan! They should do that on ALL games these days. Have Japan do the music, sound driver and sound effects, programming , and Graphic designs while America debugs the game and create the game manual.

  • @Zyxxs Yes!

  • Game has some rockin tunes.
