The inaugural Fresh Material finalist day took place last Wednesday (1st April 2009) with shortlisted Primary 7 Pupils from across Glasgow coming together to present their event ideas in a Dragons Den style pitch in front of an expert panel of judges from across the event industries in Scotland.

Judges Sera Miller (Founding Partner and MD of organisers Material), Louise Martin CBE (Chair of sportscotland and Vice Chair of the Organising Committee for the 2014 Commonwealth Games), Geoff Ellis (CEO at DF Concerts), Bridget McConnell (Chief Executive at Culture and Sport Glasgow) and Paul Bush OBE (Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland) were wowed by presentations that ranged from a Who Wants to be a Millionaire style quiz to Hollywood red carpet style interviews reminiscent of the Oscars via a pitch from Tracy Beaker, Hermione Granger and Captain Hook with lots more imaginative presentations in-between.

Overall, all 5 schools event ideas were felt to have been winners and as such, the prize fund will now be split equally between all 5 finalists, enabling every finalist school to fulfil their event plans and deliver their proposed event this coming June.

In addition to the £1000 financial support each school will now receive, the teams will also receive the invaluable mentoring and activation assistance from the entire judging panel. This will be delivered via a dedicated Project Manager from organisers Material who will liaise with the judges respective organisations to deliver support and assistance across all 5 events where relevant.

The 5 winning schools which will see their events supported and delivered for 2009 are: Our Lady of the Rosary for 'Big Brother OLR'; St Brigid's Primary for 'Anti Bullying Charity Film Premiere'; Blackfriars Primary for 'Once Upon A TimeBooks Fun Day'; Mount Florida Primary for 'Multi-cultural Festival'; St Thomas' Primary for 'Community Health & Sport Fantastic Fun Day'.

Part 1 of 3 shows the judges arriving and schools preparing for their pitches.

Part 2 of 3 shows the pupils reactions after their pitches.

Part 3 of 3 shows the judges commenting on the 5 pitches and announcing the winners.

  • There should be a follow-up where you see all the schools do their project ( or atleast OLR).
