1986: Mir (USSR)

Mir was a Soviet (and later Russian) orbital station. Mir was the world's first consistently inhabited long-term research station in space, and the first 'third generation' type space station, constructed over a number of years with a modular design. This brief video shows the first section being launched on 19 February 1986.

every habitable space station has been cramped and made up of small modules with the exception of the giant Skylab (USA 1973) which had the width of a 2 story building
