Secret Life 5/5 (The Story of a Child Sex Offender, Channel 4, 2007)

Charlie is white, middle class and a child sex offender. And though he's served his sentence, by his own admission, he continues to pose a significant danger to children. When the rehabilitation centre he has elected to attend is shut down, he is cast adrift in the local community, without guidance or psychological treatment, to struggle alone with his compulsion to re-offend. Written after the closure of the last rehabilitation centre for child sex offenders in the UK, Secret Life is a difficult and powerful feature-length drama that seeks to explore how children can be safeguarded from convicted child sex offenders. And which questions the lack of effective measures in place to prevent them from re-offending.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggghhh­hhhh...Why did I watch this movie? Not that is wasn't good, I'm just going to have to watch Little Dorrit and Pride & Prejudice about thirty thousand times each to get the thought of Matthew Macfadyen playing a paedophile out of my mind!

@maham21jan True, the girls looked much younger than 17 or 15. Clearly this man is over 30 years old. Yeah, these pedophiles seem to live in a fantasy dream world. Clearly their intense (sexual) urges affect their mind and the way they see and interpret reality. Sad, must be horrible to have such an unhealthy and potentially harmful compulsion :(

I thought he was deliberately lying because he wanted the girls to feel more comfortable around him. Also, he must be living in a kind of fantasy that the girls are older than they actually are and that he is younger so as to rationalize his feelings for them.

He killed himself because he did not want to hurt children. In his own crazy compulsive and sexual way he loved children very deeply. The insane urges that drove him to commit pedophilia also drove him to commit suicide at the end. This was a troubled man, but after committing such an irrational act against a child and being set back into society who would not be troubled. How can anyone hope to be normal after what happened to them in the past and what they have done wrong to others....

What a superb production. It was really interesting to see it portrayed from the offender's point of view and I think C4 respected the sensitivity of the issue. I was impressed how they made you feel for Charlie but still kept the awful crimes he committed at the forefront to avoid sympathy towards paedofillia.  It is such a shocking and unforgivable thing to do.
