Ein schöner Morgen mit ordentlich Flugbetrieb am Eingang zum Nistkasten. Die ersten Jungköniginnen fliegen aus, ein paar Orientierungsflüge werden erfolgreich absolviert.

jaja goldig, niedlich und friedlich. reiß mal ein dach ab und unter der gaube oder ziegel haben sich die mädels breit gemacht, die werden richtig pampig.

so niedlich sind die nicht zumindest nicht für dachdecker ;)

Ja, ich habe auch schon die eine oder andere nicht ganz so niedliche Erfahrung mit ihnen gemacht. Kann ziemlich schmerzhaft sein. Und in Deinem Handwerk wirst Du die wohl öfter machen als ich. Aber sieh es mal so, wenn Dir einer die Bude zerpflückt, würdest Du ihn wahrscheinlich auch nicht mit Kaffee und Kuchen empfangen ...

Thx Muromez. You put the door on 1 night with workers in, then how do you keep the door open a little. Cold you explain the training aspect please. It is something I am going to do IF I can persuade a queen to nest. I have a Shwegler b.bee nest box for years and 1 has never occupied it, instead using bird box! Thinking actual positioning of box has always been to dissatisfaction of queen, advice please!!! Thx again, George

Yes I put the door on when the first workers are flying. In the evening when all bumblebees are in the nest. But you have to train the bumblebees a little bit to use the door. Two days are enough. Every few hours the door will closed more, then they know how it work.

And yes. 18-20 mm for the entrance is a result of experience of many people who have bumblebees in nestboxes.

Do you mean the bend at the bottom of the door? It's easier for the bumblebees to open it.

When do you put the trap door on? After a queen has accepted the nest, after a few workers have been born and start leaving/entering the nest or when? I like this idea and have not seen it here in the UK.

I am aware that mice are able to get through a hole that is about lead pencil size. Is this 18-20mm size hole made as a result of experience, guess work or research?

Does the bend make it easier for the bees to enter the nest I assume?
