How Ghaddafi undermined his own state, "Some ministers can't write. Colonels had to drive taxis." Article www.KiwiVenture.com

As Muammar Ghaddafi's forces were moving on Benghazi before the No Fly Zone I interviewed the people of East Libya for a documentary on how Gaddafi maintained power over minds and lives for so long.

In part 2 a former journalist and believer in Ghaddfi , now bringing in food supplies at cost to Eastern Libya to prevent war profiteering, speaking about the imprisonment of 4 of his friends and how the uprising is being hijacked by looters. Also why the regular Libyan army, civil service and ministers were so weak and Abu Salim prison massacre. On a lighter side, a delightful motorist sings an opening hymn to Ghaddafi "the Donkey" while driving me to a checkpoint for breakfast.

In part 3 you can hear the views of an islamic preacher jailed for 21 years who helped negotiate an end to the protest in 1996 at infamous Abu Salim prison massacre in which over 1000 mostly young muslim men were executed en masse.

In part 4 a former oil tanker pilot, imprisoned for marrying a New Zealand woman takes me to Benghazi criminal prison and recounts how Ghaddafi gained so much power.

In Part 5 a visit to Ghaddafi's retreat in the Green mountains, the ancient sites of classical Cyrene used by Saif for his own collections of statues and the Shahat military base stormed by locals in order to seize and kill mercenaries of Khamis and Saadi in Eastern Libya.

In part 1 you can hear an oil safety specialist in Tobruk talking of the people who support Ghaddafi. Ghaddafi..He's on the moon -one of Ghaddafi's "security" men.
Also the Green Book and halucinogens.

  • Hi West of Tobruk. Thanks for the feedback.

Did not personally see blowing up of “gates” along border. Hany talks of the copper wiring being stripped in “small villages”. In Benghazi the stripping I saw firsthand was at former criminal prison, consistent with what you say about the security apparatus. It did dismay my host, Ali. Looting of foreign companies who fled -earthmoving machinery & a new university extension(computers, burning the building - not Bengazhi) is also reported by the BBC

  • This destruction he speaks about was not apparent in Benghazi. Out of all of those I spoke to between Benghazi and Tobruk, I never heard these stories. Not to say that they didn't happen, but I am a bit surprised that I didn't hear of this. Is there any evidence of this looting? Can the source be trusted? Just curious.
