  • Jon, thanks for help in the past, I've a 5239 and I've fitted new gaskets thru from the filter to the crankcase, but the carb bowl is overfilling and spilling fuel up into the ventura? area and back out into the air filter. Any idea what I need to do to stop this?

  • @tubernua571

  • Thanks Jon you've a great collection there, am dyin to get mine back to work, it started after 5 years out of service but since then it wont restart so am puttin a whole new set of gaskets from the air filter in as far as the crankcase and a new reed and primer set too..... Gotta love the old stuff !

Not familiar with the early 70s model, but yeah you need to take off the blade and the 2 or 3 bolts that hold off the muffler in place. Then the cover should come right off.

Then clean the cover and plate and epecially near the area where the piston is.

  • Jon I have a '70 5239. I want to clean out the exhaust port, do I need to take the blade off to get the muffler off? And do I just take the muffler cover off and clean everything there or do I need to get the muffler plate off too?

I did. However the prices are a bit out of my price range. A self-propelled Honda brand is more than $600 + tax here and its pretty heavy to lift up in and out of my car. Also since my mowers run on average 8-10 hours a day, I appreciate the power and durability of a 2-stroke more than a 4. Honda engines are very reliable (my clients Honda powered MTD started in 3 pulls after 2 yrs but don't forget these 20 year old Lawnboys will start in 1-2 pulls if well cared for
