  • Thanks for explaining. Very helpful, and it sounds like a brush I would like to get--my wish list is getting longer... :) One more question if you don't mind. Besides being smaller, how does it compare to the short hair deer/wolf brush in terms of texture, harder or softer?

  • @lindaag0 That mop shaped deer-wolf brush is on the delicate and soft side of wolf brush. Compared to the new rat whisker landscape brush it is a little bit softer in terms of texture and hardness but the difference is mainly in the saze and shape. Normally rat whisker hair has limitted length so he cannot make it as big as the wolf hair brushes. Some brush makers may call their brushes "rat whisker" but they might actually not.

  • Thanks Henry...great explanation.

  • @MrHroark Thank you!

  • Thanks Henry. That's great to hear about Wang Xizhi's brush. I love his calligraphy. Is a rat whisker brusher harder or softer than a mountain horse or a badger brush?

  • @lindaag0 Linda, rat whisker is much thinner than the horse or badger bristles so it is not harder but softer. It is more like the sable brush but a little bit harder than sable. That is why this kind of brush is good for cursive style calligraphy or lining. Horse or badger brushes are good for thursty brush strokes with rough bristle to generating more "flying white". Thank you for your questions!

    Hi Henry

I do not know that I am going to be able to take the class at this time. Will it be available on video, or subscription or something afterwards?

  • @lindaag0 Thanks! Glad that you like the disappearing magic cloth. The new rat whisker landscape is what I just ordered for the class and it is also available separtely now. Please look for "Rat Whisker Landscape Brush Signiture Edition" at BlueHeronArts website. This brush is much smaller than horse and badger brushes and is made based the legendary Wang Xizhi who wrote the fomous Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion with a rat whisker brush like this. Thank you!

  • Great intro to supplies. How does a rat whisker brush compare to mountain horse and badger brushes? Is it available separately? btw, the magic cloth remains one of my favorite supplies. Even when I don't have the energy or time to get out my ink, etc, I can still practice very simply even if only for a few minutes. Interestingly, I usually like my practices on the magic paper much better than my actual practice paintings! Guess I feel less inhibited cause it disappears!

  • @Marcussss92 Please see video description for direct link to the student pack available to general public at our online store BlueHeronArts(,)com. Thanks!
