A video tutorial that defines resonance and how it is achieved in singing. For a quick reference of the terms in this video, see the glossary below:

Open Throat: The singer's throat needs to remain open and free at all times, like a column or a round tube.
Appoggio Method: "to lean on". Technique used to slow the ascent of the diaphragm for improved breath management.
Breath Support: Using other parts of the body to support the tone and sing extended long notes and phrases.
Resonator: Chamber of air space that extends from vocal folds to the lips.
Projection: The ability of a sound to carry well over other sounds.
The Ring: A resonance of the vocal tract at around 2800 Hz. This is the special region which opera singers use to project over the orchestra.
Larynx: Structure that contains the vocal folds.
Vocal tract: The channel through which sound passes after produced in the larynx. Comprised of the larynx, pharynx, the mouth and the nose.
Pharynx: Space above the larynx and behind the mouth.
Pharyngeal constrictors: Assist during swallowing and regurgitation. The job of these constrictors in singing is to stay out of the way.
Nasal Cavity: Lies above the oral cavity. If not closed off by the soft palate, it can nasalize the tone and detract from resonance. The only time the soft palate should be slightly lowered is resonate nasal consonants like [m] and [n].
Soft Palate: The back part of the roof of the mouth; soft and flexible, and does not contain bony structures. Closes off the nose when we speak or sing.
Velopharyngeal Port: Small opening between the oral and nasal cavity that can be closed off to varying degrees according to the position of the soft palate.
The Mask: The area in front of the face. Asking singers to place the tone in the mask will help singers draw the sound forward in the vocal tract. It is merely an imaginative process, not a physical one.

  • "Mariah Carey achieving the ring as she experiences strong sensations in the forehead" taken out of the context this sounds funny

  • @MrJudube So how's it taken out of context?

  • @BZBlaner: Is Christina Aguilera pushing her larynx down to sing low notes and mid notes?

  • @babylovemeonemoretim Christina is the classic example of singing with a high larynx. The higher she goes in pitch, the more elevated it becomes.

As for the low notes, I hear no indication of a pushed larynx. She just reaches those notes by breathing, hence the fogginess.

  • So is nasal resonance a good resonance? I've read in some textbooks that nasal resonance is a good resonance and a few of them said that it's the same as "the mask"...and I'm having my doubts.

  • @valarangel Yawn deeply and you'll feel it going up. It's the soft tissue that the back of your tongue leans on against when you swallow. It can be consciously manipulated, but it may take some practice for some people.

  • @iiAmitx3 right!?!? isn't it like an addiction?! BZBlaner does perfect videos!!

  • how would one lift the soft palate?! is it controllable by direct manipulation? i mean, can it be trained? or the work is directly on the appoggio you mentioned early? thank you in advance.

  • leona, 7, siobhan,9, barbra, 10!!, kelly, 8, beyonce,9, christina,6, anna,9, sohyang,9, Jojo,9, juan,9, jordan, 7, celine 6, jessice,7...I'm just trying it lol I'm still an amateur

  • 3rd time im seeing thiese 2 videos :D

  • Ahh Jessica should just stop trying... she makes me want to kill myself.

  • i've always felt that christina knows how to properly place her larynx but she raises it in order to achieve the sound she likes. which is throaty and screechy. I thinks its cause ive heard her do quite a few full resonant notes.... i think.
