Starting on Mars in the Sol system can be difficult, but it's not as hopeless as it might seem at first. If you reequip your ship, you can start running goods between Sol and Barnard's Star. There are hardly any pirates in this region, and you can outrun them anyways.

Sol wants mechanical stuff, and Barnard's Star wants food stuff. Generally, I'd recommend trading in expensive goods. Even if the profit is relatively small, there's a chance that you'll get to sell on an BBS for double the price. So, if you buy a unit for 1000, and it normally sells for 1020, and someone wants it for double the price, then your profit is (1020*2)-1000.

It's a gamble though, you have to be quite certain that the commodity is in demand, or no one will offer to buy it at double the price.

If you're not feeling lucky, you can buy both Computers and Robots when heading to Sol, and hope that at least one of them have a 2x offer. The prices listed below vary a bit, so these values are approximate.

Ship to Sol: invest, profit
Robots ____560, *1=330, *2=1220
Computers _350, *1=170, *2=690

You can't really count on getting a 2x offer at Barnard's Star, because it doesn't have that many outposts.

Ship to Barnard's Star:
Fruit and Veg. _90, *1=35, *2=160
Liquor _______345, *1=70, *2=485
Luxury goods _1200, *1=300, *2=1800

As for what ship to upgrade to, I don't know. The Gecko, Sidewinder and Krait are a slight step up in size, but I think that you need to leave the Core Systems to get those. The Adder unfortunately a relatively large Class 2 drive to make the Sol - Barnard's Star jump.

Oh yeah, I unwittingly de-synched the sound when I throttled the emulation speed (to shorten the video), so I had to use AudioSwap. I think it works though.

  • Did you use Dosbox to play this game, if so would you be able to make a tutourial on how to boot up this game using dosbox.I haven't played this game in years and it would be great to relive those old memories.

  • @gundog39 - No, I did not use DosBox. This is the Amiga version. I prefer the untextured look. I used WinUAE, which has a built in video recording function. I also used JIT (emulation option) to get a very nice frame rate. That said, I do have some experience using DosBox. Look up "Basic Setup and Installation of DosBox".

  • @androidarts

Have you tried using the OpenGL version?

It uses the amiga version as a base, but you can edit the cfg file and run at much higher resolutions :D (I've tried it all the way up to 1920x1200 and it worked fine).

    you can get it here:

    tom.noflag.org.uk

It's from one of the guys programming the pioneer frontier remake :D

  • @CorpBlitz Thanks, I'll check those out :) I also want to try Arc Elite at some point.

  • OMG I REALLLLY WANT TO PLAY THIS AGEIN! :'( Love it soo much

  • i love this game. Brings back happy memories!

  • @trukkle Difficult to explain clearly with less than 500 characters, but you can look it up if I'm being confusing here: 1. Enter star system, target space station, use Autopilot as normal for a while. Switch to Engines Off, hold Enter to super accelerate. Also gradually speed up time. When almost overshooting target, switch back to Autopilot. Zonk! Game decides to just plop you into docking mode. No one can catch you since you won't have to decelerate, and you save time.

  • your better with pioneer space simulator its a pc remake of this and its free ang has better graphics, google it.
