Janet Baker reaches perfection in this song. Unsurpassed humility in a singer who wants to bring out the best of Schubert. Her approach, both musically and spiritually is one of the supreme artist. None of the typical singers' gestures or manerisms-just pure artistry.
Others would do well to learn from her.

Perahia on piano! Now that's class. And only what she deserved.
If one knows this Schubert lied well, (and I have worked on it for a while now, ) you cannot help but applaud the superb and effortless musicianship which Dame Baker brings to this performance. I have the music before me and I marvel at how intimately and gracefully she has made this song her own. Breath support is incredible. Beautiful phrasing. How she has fully entered into the spirit of the song and sings, really, from inside the music! Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

Lovely. My first real exposure to Dame Janet. Nice job Murray! I was your taxi service using an old VW bug convertible in the middle of winter when you gave a recital at SUNY Fredonia (southwest of Buffalo) in the late 70's.
