Rosita Quiroga -- Pato, tango (Ramon Collazo), Victor 1926

NOTE: In Spanish the word "pato" means "duck" but in Buenos Aires dialect, it translates as ""poor boy". The lyrics say: "I saw you pass by with a haughty air, your face all made up, in an elegant car with your rich woman...I said "Hi" and you pretended not to know me but I know you and you were poor and you will always be poor...one day that woman will leave you and you will be back to scrounge in our neighborhood". The music and lyrics were composed by Ramon Collazo who was born in Montevideo in 1901 to a struggling Italian immigrant family. As a composer, he had a number of successes but non more than "Pato" which was also recorded by Carlos Gardel in Spain. See another recording of that famous tango made in 1928 by Polish orchestra directed by Artur Gold and Jerzy Petersburski http://youtu.be/vcqR_9DLvaQ

Rosita QUIROGA (1896 -- 1984) was the first female tango singer in the payador tradition (itinerant singing improvisers). She grew up in La Boca naighbourhood of Buenos Aires where she learned to play guitar from her neighbour, who was a famous guitar player, Juan De Dios Filiberto. In her singing, she unashamedly used the slang and the vulgar language she heard from the dock workers and street boys. Her first tango was "La Tipa" recorded around 1923. Soon, came fame and popularity and high incomes from recordings and public performances. In 1930, one journalist called her "the Piaf from the outskirts of Buenos Aires". Through 1930s she continued to make occasional recordings and radio radio appearances before, in the age of 35 she ended her career for -- as she said - "she was no more fond of public performances". However, in 1976 she was cajoled to appear in her only film "El Canto Quenta Su Historia" and in 1984 she made her last recording "Campaneando Mi Pasado" for which she wrote the music. 32 days later she would pass away at the age of 88.

  • Fantastic performance. I'd only like to point out "pato" in Spanish normally means "duck" instead of chick or, in popular language, someone boring, slow, dim-witted person.

  • @1920sbuff Yes, "duck" - it's true. I always had problem with the right IDs in the poultry world. Sorry, I just made a correction in my info :-)

  • Bonito,gracias!

  • Nice.

  • Not bad Q for 86 years ago! Clear vocal - could be yesterday...

  • Latin passion. Intriguing images of furtive encounters at 2:51 and 3:00.

  • Hello Grzegorz - Rosita Quiroga has a silky, low voice and I much prefer her rendition to that of Carlos Gardel - in my collection. The frames: 1:24, 2:04, 2:45 - show Rudolph Valentin looking totally divine. No wonder women flocked in millions to see him on the silver screen - even if his acting was only passable. His funeral was made into a massive "circus" with some crazy publicists claiming that no less that 15 women commited suicide upon learning of his death. Thanks a lot for this vid!!!

  • Sensuous and passionate, with neat combo of colored and b&W images. I love that final poster with the shoeshine kiosk. She looks sexy and prim at the same time. no mean feat. (Accdental pun. Really.)

  • To tango bardzo przyjemne dla ucha, cudowne są te argentyńskie, mają w sobie to coś. Podoba mi się także orkiestrowa wersja w wykonaniu Ork. Petersburski- Gold. Znakomicie interpretowali te tanga argentyńskie Ordonka czy Chor Dana np. "Liana" czy "Chwila przed zmrokiem" Pozdrawiam ;-)
