He was making more than 1,000 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Bowlly was born in Mozambique to Greek and Lebanese parents who met en route to Australia and moved to South Africa. He was brought up in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was killed by the explosion of a parachute mine outside his apartment in Jermyn Street, London during the Blitz.

a shame about the sound

even though the sound quality leaves much to be desired, you can't deny how wonderful Al Bowlly's singing is.

This is Al Bowlly's very first recording, I believe! Too bad the sound is bad. There must be a better quality version around ?

As far as I know Al was brought up in Durban. That is certainly where my great-uncle, Edgar Adeler discovered him singing to himself at the back of the barber's shop his uncle had bought for him. There's no orchestra on this, just Edgar on piano and Al on guitar.

Interesting early recording of Blue Skies...sorry to hear about his early exit via a parachute mine though....
