Suggesting a different song should not be an issue. The job of the judges is to find the best singers. If they realize that someone has talent but is not displaying it properly [such as poor song choice], what is wrong with telling them to sing their backup song? As far as how it unfolded, of course the auditions are edited to create drama. As much as I love the Susan Boyle clip, I find it a great example of such editing.
