In this tutorial, Dubspot Electronic Music Production and Sound Design Instructor Evan Sutton will demonstrate two techniques for sidechain compression in Logic Pro in the context of dance pop production. These techniques can be used in a number of different musical contexts, and can be even more handy when made part of a Logic template.

The first technique will involve simple ducking of a bass in order to make room for a kick drum. When mixing, subtractive equalization is very important to make sure that there is room for all of the sounds, and that they're not clashing. With this technique, we can have sounds share a particular frequency range, while also creating some interesting rhythmic effects.

The second technique uses an instance of Ultrabeat with the sequencer turned on, to create a ghost sidechain. In some cases, you may want to create a rhythmic ducking effect, even though there is no other instrument useful as a sidechain. That's where this trick comes in, and it's simple to build into templates. Ultrabeat's unique features make this one possible. Simple automation can create a transition between rhythmic ducking, and no ducking, so as to create a dynamic, evolving sound.

These two compression techniques are grounded in principles that are portable to all DAWs and compressors, but Logic's unique interface, and features like Ultrabeat's sequencer make it perfect for use with alternate and unique routings.

  • Great tutorial! Im a subscriber now.

  • lmao, "Think of it like Whack-A-Mole". Never woulda dreamed of that comparison to explain a compressor :D

  • @BrandonRStoner Duplicate your drum tracks and in #2 make it kick only and sidechain that track. Leave all the other drum sounds in drum track #1 without any sidechaining. Hope this helps

  • Good golly miss dolly, I came here to learn about sidechaining, but your explanation of how compressors work is the BEST and simplest one I've heard/read. Wish I had seen this video when I was getting started

  • Crystal Clear thanks!

  • great video !! thanks, you explain very well !

  • I can't find any tutorials that just push the kick without the other drums. Driving me insane. :(

  • Wow this was an awesome tutorial man! Your explanations are a lot more clear! thanx for the upload!
